The Scriptures - Getting Them Inside

Purpose:

To illustrate that we must learn and live the scriptures in order to gain access to the spiritual wisdom and power they possess.

Materials:

Lesson:

  1. Begin by announcing that you have a terrible headache. Ask if you can have a moment to take an aspirin. Take the aspirin and tape it to your forehead.

  2. Ask, "How long do you think it will take for the aspirin to take care of my headache?"
    1. Help your listeners understand that the pill won't help until it gets inside our bodies.

  3. Hold up the scriptures. Testify that the scriptures are powerful medicine for every spiritual illness ever known to man and contain the wisdom to help us obtain eternal life.
    1. Ask, "What must I do to have these scriptures help me?" (study and live them)

  4. Scriptures you may want to share:
    1. 1 Nephi 15:23-24
    2. 2 Nephi 32:3
    3. 2 Timothy 3:14-17

  5. You may want to share portions from the excellent article by Elder Howard W. Hunter, "Reading the Scriptures" (Ensign, November 1979, 64).

  6. Challenge your listeners to spend time daily in the scriptures and to strive to apply them in their lives.
